Sri Lanka: President opens the largest irrigation project

The project is expected to enhance the lives of 1.5 million families






( November 30, 2018, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) President Maithripala Sirisena, today (Nov 30) declared open the Moragahakanda-Kaluganga project which is expected to facilitate irrigational activities for over 82,000 hectares of farmland.

According to the President's Media Division, the project is expected to enhance the lives of 1.5 million families while generating 25 MW hydro-powers to the national grid.

Apart from providing clean drinking water, the project would also witness the birth of over 5000 hectares of land for agriculture.

The original Moragahakanda reservoir was first constructed by King Wasaba in 111 AD.

The Moragahakanda Dam, is a 65 m (213 ft) high gravity dam. The dam will create the Moragahakanda Reservoir, which will have an active storage capacity of 521,000,000 m3 (1.84×1010 cu ft) of water, at a surface elevation of 185 m (607 ft).

Two additional embankment saddle dams were also constructed to contain the Moragahakanda Reservoir. The reservoir of the Kalu Ganga Dam linked via a tunnel.
