( November 7, 2018, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Ambassador Teplitz met with the Speaker of Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya and separately the Leader of the Opposition, R. Sampanthan. The Ambassador underscored the importance of Parliament reconvening in order to put an end to political turmoil. democratic institutions should serve the people of Sri Lanka and restated the United States’ commitment to Constitutional reform and other steps necessary for lasting reconciliation.

Ambassador Alaina B. Teplitz officially began her tenure as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka last week after presenting her credentials to President Maithripala Sirisena.

During the ceremony, she says, " I am honored to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka at this critical moment for the country and region. For seven decades, the United States has supported Sri Lanka on its path to peace and prosperity. I look forward to joining you on this journey as we work together to address the challenges and seize the opportunities that lay ahead to ensure a safe and thriving Indo-Pacific region. Together, we can help ensure a future in which democracy empowers the people and all rest assured of respect for human rights."
