Death to Traitors: Sri Lanka’s Retired Army General warned against constitutional reformists

The following experts of the speech made by the Maj Gen Kamal Gunaratne’s speech at Viyathmaga, organised by Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former secretary to the Ministry of Defence.

(October 24, 2017, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) In order to create a positive environment for you and children to live, recall the significant sacrifices made by 10,000 innocent boys and soldiers who are now bed-ridden. Then, keeping the memory of their sacrifice in your hearts, go to your temples. Go to the important people in your area. Tell them, pressure them, to tell those who can give a 2/3rd majority to (pass) the new constitution, to oppose it.

To stop it. Tell your priests, if there is someone who supports the 2/3rd majority (needed to pass the new constitution), do not even tie a ‘pirith noola’ on them, do not bless them, do not even go to their houses. I speak from the heart. I have no political aspirations. I love my country.
Those who have been born to this nation, who now try to destroy this nation, are traitors. Like Sarath Weerasekara says, traitors should suffer the same fate as those who in ’87, ’88 and ’89, you will recall, the JVP had plastered everywhere, “Death to Traitors”.

The sentence that befits traitors is death. (Audience claps). If there are those who sell the country, those who break up the country, if there are traitors like this, they deserve death. At the same time, during the ’87, ’88 and ’89 period’s JVP terrorism, those who were killed as terrorists, when they were taking to Kanatta (burial ground), they didn’t allow the corpse to be lifted more than six inches from the ground. They picked up the body with wire. The traitors today must also be recognised the same way. Thank you for listening to me. (Audience claps).”
